Position Overview
We are seeking an Accountant to support financial operations within the insurance and accounting industry. This role is responsible for maintaining accurate financial records, preparing reconciliations and reports, processing transactions, and supporting month-end and year-end close activities. The ideal candidate has strong accounting fundamentals, excellent attention to detail, and an understanding of insurance-related financial transactions, controls, and reporting requirements.
This position will collaborate with finance, underwriting, claims, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and other business teams to ensure accurate, timely, and compliant financial information.
Key Responsibilities
General Accounting and Financial Reporting
Record, review, and maintain accurate general ledger transactions in accordance with accounting policies and applicable standards.
Prepare journal entries, account analyses, trial balances, and supporting schedules for monthly, quarterly, and annual reporting.
Assist with month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close processes, including accruals, prepayments, reclassifications, and variance analysis.
Support the preparation of financial statements, management reports, and financial reporting packages.
Investigate and resolve accounting discrepancies and unusual transactions in a timely manner.
Insurance Accounting Operations
Process and reconcile insurance-related transactions, including premiums, commissions, claims, recoveries, reserves, and policy-related receivables and payables.
Review transaction data from policy administration, billing, claims, and insurance accounting systems for completeness and accuracy.
Assist with the accounting and reconciliation of reinsurance transactions, bordereaux, settlements, and related balances as applicable.
Coordinate with underwriting, claims, operations, and finance teams to resolve differences and ensure accurate financial treatment.
Maintain organized documentation for insurance accounting entries, reconciliations, and supporting schedules.
Reconciliations, Controls and Compliance
Complete bank, general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, premium, claims, and other balance sheet reconciliations.
Identify reconciling items, document findings, and follow up with relevant stakeholders through resolution.
Follow established internal controls, accounting policies, and regulatory requirements related to insurance and financial reporting.
Support internal and external audits by preparing schedules, documentation, and responses to information requests.
Maintain confidentiality and protect sensitive financial, customer, policyholder, and claims information.
Process Improvement and Collaboration
Partner with cross-functional teams to improve transaction accuracy, reporting processes, and close timelines.
Identify opportunities to streamline reconciliations, reporting, data validation, and accounting workflows.
Assist with accounting system implementations, process documentation, and user acceptance testing as needed.
Prepare clear written explanations of financial results, account movements, and identified issues.
Stay current on accounting standards, insurance industry practices, and relevant regulatory requirements.
Qualifications
Requirements
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field.
2+ years of accounting experience, preferably within insurance, financial services, public accounting, or a related industry.
Working knowledge of general ledger accounting, journal entries, account reconciliations, accruals, and financial reporting.
Understanding of insurance accounting concepts, including premiums, commissions, claims, reserves, reinsurance, and policy-related transactions.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with excellent attention to detail and accuracy.
Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, including formulas, pivot tables, lookups, and data analysis.
Experience using accounting, enterprise resource planning (ERP), policy administration, or financial reporting systems.
Ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and work effectively with cross-functional teams.
Strong English communication skills, both written and verbal.
Preferred
Certified Public Accountant (CPA), Certified Management Accountant (CMA), or progress toward a relevant professional certification.
Experience with insurance accounting, reinsurance accounting, statutory reporting, or financial services reporting.
Knowledge of U.S. Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS), or insurance regulatory reporting requirements.
Experience with accounting platforms such as NetSuite, QuickBooks, SAP, Oracle, Microsoft Dynamics, or similar systems.
Experience supporting audits, internal controls testing, process improvement, or financial system implementations.
