Position Overview
We are seeking an Accounting Specialist to support accounting operations for the insurance and accounting industry. In this role, you will ensure accurate financial data, manage day-to-day accounting tasks, and support month-end and year-end close activities.
You will work closely with internal teams across accounting, finance, insurance, billing, claims, and operations to help ensure transactions are recorded correctly, reconciliations are completed on time, and documentation is maintained according to process and compliance requirements.
Key Responsibilities
Accounting Operations and Transaction Management
Process and monitor accounts payable and accounts receivable transactions, including invoices, payments, deposits, refunds, and adjustments.
Prepare and review routine journal entries, including accruals, prepayments, reclassifications, and corrections, ensuring proper supporting documentation.
Verify coding accuracy, approvals, and completeness of billing and payment records before posting.
Maintain organized accounting files, audit trails, contracts, and financial documentation.
Assist with data validation and ensure transactions are recorded in the correct accounts and periods.
Insurance Accounting Support
Record and reconcile insurance-related transactions such as premiums, commissions, claims payments, recoveries, refunds, and policy-related receivables and payables.
Review billing, policy administration, claims, and payment information for completeness, accuracy, and consistency.
Assist with reconciliation of insurance billing records, customer accounts, carrier statements, and related payment activity.
Investigate and resolve discrepancies involving premiums, commissions, claims, refunds, settlements, and other insurance transactions.
Coordinate with underwriting, claims, billing, finance, and operations teams to address accounting issues and document resolutions.
Maintain accurate records for policyholders, customers, vendors, carriers, and other business partners.
Reconciliations, Reporting, and Close Support
Perform bank, credit card, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and general ledger reconciliations.
Research reconciling items, identify root causes, and document findings and corrective actions.
Support month-end and year-end close activities, including account reviews, cutoff checks, and preparation of supporting schedules.
Prepare recurring account summaries, aging reports, transaction detail, and other routine financial reports.
Assist with audit support by compiling schedules, documentation, and evidence for internal and external review.
Controls, Compliance, and Continuous Improvement
Follow accounting policies, internal controls, segregation of duties, and approval requirements.
Protect confidential financial, customer, policyholder, claims, and business information.
Ensure accounting records are maintained accurately in line with applicable accounting standards and company procedures.
Support improvements to accounting workflows, documentation standards, and reconciliation processes.
Assist with accounting system updates, data checks, reporting enhancements, and process documentation.
Support compliance reviews and other finance-related projects as assigned.
Qualifications
Requirements
Associate's or bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
1+ year of experience in accounting support, bookkeeping, accounts payable, accounts receivable, or a related financial operations role.
Working knowledge of double-entry accounting, general ledger maintenance, and account reconciliations.
Basic understanding of insurance accounting transactions (e.g., premiums, commissions, claims, refunds, and policy-related activity).
Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including formulas, sorting, filtering, and basic data analysis.
Experience using accounting software and/or enterprise systems (e.g., ERP or financial management platforms).
Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy in financial data.
Ability to prioritize work, manage deadlines, and handle confidential information professionally.
Strong English communication skills, both written and verbal.
Preferred
Experience in insurance, financial services, public accounting, or professional services.
Familiarity with accounting systems such as QuickBooks, NetSuite, SAP, Oracle, or Microsoft Dynamics.
Knowledge of insurance billing, claims payment processes, commissions, carrier statements, and policy-related accounting.
Awareness of U.S. GAAP, IFRS, and/or insurance accounting practices.
Experience supporting month-end close, audits, internal controls, or financial reporting.
Progress toward a relevant certification in accounting or finance (e.g., bookkeeping or accounting credentials).
