Position Overview
We are looking for a ROS 2 Firmware Engineer to develop real-time embedded firmware and low-latency communication systems for advanced robotic platforms.
You will work at the intersection of embedded software, robotics middleware, motor control interfaces, and real-time operating systems. Your primary focus will be developing firmware for joint actuators and sensor acquisition, implementing deterministic communication over industrial fieldbuses, and ensuring reliable communication between low-level hardware and the robot's onboard computing system.
This role requires strong hands-on expertise in embedded C/C++, microcontrollers, real-time communication protocols, and Linux-based robotic systems.
Key Responsibilities
Develop embedded C/C++ firmware for STM32 and ARM Cortex microcontrollers used in robotic actuation and sensor acquisition.
Implement and maintain firmware using micro-ROS, FreeRTOS, or bare-metal embedded architectures.
Develop deterministic, high-speed motor communication interfaces using CAN-FD, CANopen, and EtherCAT.
Optimize communication and control data exchange to support high-frequency robotic control loops operating above 500 Hz.
Configure, maintain, and optimize PREEMPT_RT real-time Linux kernels on onboard control computers to minimize latency and scheduling jitter.
Develop and maintain low-level device drivers and hardware interfaces that connect actuators, sensors, and embedded computing systems.
Integrate embedded firmware with ROS 2-based robotic software architectures.
Implement hardware diagnostics, fault detection, and automated emergency-stop (E-stop) mechanisms to improve system safety and reliability.
Develop power-management and hardware monitoring firmware for robotic subsystems.
Troubleshoot communication failures, timing inconsistencies, and hardware-software integration issues across the robotic platform.
Collaborate with robotics controls, hardware integration, and edge systems engineers to support reliable end-to-end system operation.
Qualifications
Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Embedded Systems, Robotics, or a related technical field.
Approximately 3–5 years of relevant experience in embedded firmware development, robotics software, or real-time systems.
Strong proficiency in embedded C/C++ programming, including bare-metal and FreeRTOS-based development.
Hands-on experience with STM32, ARM Cortex microcontrollers, or comparable embedded hardware platforms.
Practical experience with industrial communication protocols, particularly EtherCAT, CAN-FD, or CANopen.
Familiarity with EtherCAT implementations such as SOEM or SOES is an advantage.
Experience with micro-ROS and integration between embedded devices and ROS 2 systems.
Understanding of Linux device drivers, real-time Linux, and PREEMPT_RT kernel configuration.
Knowledge of deterministic communication, control-loop timing, interrupt handling, and latency optimization.
Experience integrating motor controllers, joint actuators, sensors, or other robotic hardware components.
Familiarity with hardware diagnostics, fault handling, emergency-stop mechanisms, and embedded power management is a plus.
Strong debugging and problem-solving skills, with the ability to investigate complex hardware-software integration issues.
