Position Summary
We are seeking an independent, detail-oriented Internal Auditor to help protect the company’s assets, strengthen internal controls, and promote fair, ethical business practices.
Reporting directly to the Owner, this position reviews financial transactions, operational processes, hiring practices, procurement, and compliance with company policies. The Internal Auditor identifies risks, investigates concerns objectively, recommends practical improvements, and verifies that corrective actions are completed.
Key Responsibilities
Internal controls and operational audits
Develop a risk-based audit plan for the Owner’s approval.
Review accounting, payroll, recruitment, HR, procurement, sales, billing, and other business processes.
Evaluate approval limits, segregation of duties, access permissions, and supporting documentation.
Identify control weaknesses, unauthorized activity, waste, and opportunities to improve efficiency.
Perform periodic spot checks and targeted reviews.
Financial and procurement reviews
Examine expenses, reimbursements, payroll changes, commissions, referral fees, vendor payments, and company credit card transactions.
Check vendor legitimacy, pricing, contracts, and potential related-party relationships.
Identify duplicate payments, unsupported expenses, unauthorized discounts, and unusual transactions.
Assess whether purchasing, payment approval, and payment release are appropriately separated.
Hiring fairness and conflicts of interest
Review whether hiring, compensation, promotions, and disciplinary decisions follow documented criteria and approval requirements.
Assess disclosures involving family, romantic, household, or financial relationships.
Identify undisclosed conflicts, favoritism, improper influence, and failures to recuse from decisions.
Review recruiter referral arrangements and potential preferential treatment of candidates or vendors.
Recommend safeguards for disclosed relationships and monitor approved exceptions.
Investigations and confidential reporting
Receive and assess concerns through designated confidential reporting channels.
Conduct Owner-authorized investigations into suspected fraud, kickbacks, policy violations, or retaliation.
Maintain objective evidence and restrict sensitive information to authorized individuals.
Coordinate with external legal, HR, accounting, or technical specialists when needed.
Reporting and corrective action
Report findings directly to the Owner, including evidence, risk level, root cause, and recommended action.
Promptly escalate significant suspected misconduct, material losses, or interference with audit work.
Maintain a corrective-action tracker with responsible persons and deadlines.
Verify remediation before closing findings.
Provide monthly updates and quarterly summaries of recurring risks.
Independence and Authority
Has direct, private access to the Owner without requiring management approval.
May access company records, systems, personnel, and premises necessary for authorized reviews, subject to applicable confidentiality and access requirements.
Covers all management levels within the approved audit scope.
Discloses personal conflicts and does not audit work they performed or decisions they approved.
Recommends improvements but does not own the processes, approve routine transactions, or make employment decisions being audited.
Escalates matters involving the Owner to a designated independent external adviser under an established protocol.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, auditing, or a related field.
At least three years of relevant internal audit, external audit, forensic accounting, or internal controls experience.
Strong understanding of financial controls, payroll, procurement, and operational risk.
Ability to analyze spreadsheets, reconcile records, investigate exceptions, and document conclusions clearly.
Excellent judgment, discretion, interviewing skills, and written communication.
CPA, CIA, CFE, or comparable certification preferred.
Experience with staffing, outsourcing, professional services, or multiple related companies preferred.
Success Measures
Completion of approved audits and timely escalation of significant findings.
Clear, evidence-supported reports and practical recommendations.
Verified resolution of priority findings.
Reduction in recurring control failures.
Consistent protection of confidentiality and auditor independence.
First 90 Days
Understand company operations and identify major risks.
Review existing reporting relationships, approval rights, and conflict disclosures.
Complete initial reviews of payroll, procurement, and hiring controls.
Present a prioritized audit plan and corrective-action tracker to the Owner.
